The biggest horse racing story of the week may not have happened on a racetrack. Billionaire businessman Tilman Fertitta has reached an agreement to acquire Caesars Entertainment in a deal valued at approximately $17.6 billion, bringing one of the largest gaming and hospitality companies in North America under the Fertitta Entertainment umbrella if approved by regulators and shareholders.

While much of the attention surrounding the deal has centered on Las Vegas casinos, sportsbooks, and the broader gaming industry, the acquisition also includes five racetrack properties that could have significant implications for horse racing across several regions of the country.

Among the most notable facilities included in the transaction is Horseshoe Indianapolis, one of the Midwest's most important racing venues. The Indiana track conducts both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing and has steadily grown its purse structure through gaming revenue. The property occupies a key position within Indiana racing and has become a important destination for horsemen throughout the region.

Also included is Harrah's Louisiana Downs, a track that has been a fixture of the Louisiana racing landscape for decades. Located in Bossier City, Louisiana Downs has long served as an important stop for horsemen competing throughout the southern racing circuit. While the state has faced numerous challenges regarding the future of racing in recent years, the facility remains a significant part of Louisiana's Thoroughbred industry.

Fertitta's acquisition would also include Harrah's Hoosier Park, one of the premier Standardbred racing facilities in North America. The Anderson, Indiana property has become synonymous with top-level harness racing and consistently hosts some of the sport's most prestigious events. Supported by a successful casino operation, Hoosier Park has helped establish Indiana as one of the strongest jurisdictions in harness racing.

Another racetrack changing hands would be Harrah's Columbus Racing & Casino in Nebraska. One of the newer racing properties in the Caesars portfolio, the facility represents a growing market as expanded gaming opportunities continue to reshape the racing landscape throughout the Midwest. The property's long-term potential remains largely untapped compared to many of its more established counterparts.

Rounding out the group is Harrah's Philadelphia, a major harness racing venue located just outside one of the country's largest metropolitan areas. The Pennsylvania racino has long benefited from a strong gaming market and remains an important contributor to the state's racing industry, which continues to be supported by casino revenue.

The question now becomes what role racing will play under Fertitta's ownership. Historically, racing operations have often taken a back seat to casino gaming within thse large organizations. However, Fertitta has built his reputation through hospitality, entertainment, and customer-focused experiences, leaving open the exciting possibility that these racing properties could receive renewed attention as part of a broader entertainment strategy.

Collectively, the five tracks span Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, and Standardbred racing while touching thousands of owners, trainers, breeders, jockeys, drivers, and racing fans across multiple states. Though they represent only a small portion of Caesars Entertainment's overall portfolio, they remain important pieces of the American racing landscape.

For now, the focus remains on obtaining the necessary approvals to complete the deal and the chance of a matching offer is a posssibility. But if the deal closes as expected, five racetracks spread across four states will suddenly find themselves operating under one of the most recognizable names in American business. While Fertitta himself has not commented specifically on the racetrack aspect of this deal, it will be interesting to see what plans he has in mind for their future as we progress through the remainder of 2026.
