Champion mare Thorpedo Anna, the 2024 Horse of the Year, has been retired from racing following her final start in the Grade I Spinster Stakes at Keeneland on October 5, 2025. The decision came after veterinarians found mild bone bruising, and her connections determined it was the right time to end her career on a positive note and prepare her for broodmare duties.

The daughter of Fast Anna will begin her new chapter at Hill ’n’ Dale Farms at Xalapa in Lexington, Kentucky, where she joins one of the most respected broodmare programs in North America. A 20 percent ownership share in Thorpedo Anna will be offered during the Keeneland Championship Sale at Del Mar on October 29, reflecting the demand and anticipation for her future in breeding.

Thorpedo Anna retires with 12 wins from 16 starts, two runner-up finishes, and total earnings of more than $5.4 million. Her list of accomplishments includes victories in the Kentucky Oaks, Acorn Stakes, Coaching Club American Oaks, Cotillion, and a front-running win in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Del Mar. She also tested her ability against male rivals in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga, finishing a close second to Fierceness, a performance that underscored her class and competitiveness.

Her 2025 campaign featured another major triumph in the Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga, where she edged Dorth Vader in a thrilling finish on Travers Day. Her fourth-place effort in the Spinster marked the end of a career defined by consistency, courage, and a rare mix of speed and stamina.

Purchased for only $40,000 as a yearling at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Sale, Thorpedo Anna rose from modest beginnings to become one of the sport’s most accomplished female racehorses. Her story became a source of inspiration for owners, breeders, and fans, showing how exceptional talent and strong management can turn a bargain purchase into a champion.

At Hill ’n’ Dale, she is expected to be paired with one of the industry’s elite stallions, with Curlin among those under consideration. Her pedigree, durability, and race record make her a valuable addition to the broodmare roster and a likely producer of high-level runners in the years to come.

As Thorpedo Anna transitions to life after racing, her achievements on the track will continue to resonate across the sport. Her combination of grit, talent, and professionalism ensured her place among the top mares of her generation, and her next chapter as a broodmare may add an entirely new dimension to her legacy.
