Emerging Market Outduels Pavlovian as top three Horses punch qualify for Derby

A head was all that separated Emerging Market and Pavlovian at the wire in Saturday’s Grade 2, $1 million Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds, but the performance itself carried far greater weight as the Kentucky Derby picture continued to take shape. Emerging Market, making just his second career start, delivered a sustained four-wide rally under Flavien Prat and wore down Pavlovian in the final strides to secure the victory and 100 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby.

Pavlovian broke sharply and was intent on the lead from the start, carving out an honest pace through an opening quarter in 22.65 seconds and a half-mile in 46.23. Autobahn applied pressure from the outside while Chip Honcho tracked closely, keeping the tempo honest as the field of nine moved down the backstretch.

Emerging Market settled comfortably in mid-pack, never far from the leaders, as Pavlovian continued to dictate terms through three-quarters in 1:10.85. The race began to take shape approaching the far turn, where the early leaders started to feel the pressure and the stalking group moved into contention.

Turning for home, Emerging Market was angled out four wide and began to make his run, quickly drawing alongside Pavlovian near the top of the stretch. What followed was a prolonged stretch battle, with neither colt willing to give in as they matched strides through the final furlong.

In the final strides, Emerging Market proved just stronger, edging clear late to stop the clock in 1:55.18 over a fast track. Pavlovian held gamely for second after setting the pace throughout, while Golden Tempo closed from the rear after early trouble to finish a clear third.

Universe navigated traffic and rallied to complete the superfecta, while Chip Honcho faded late after pressing the early pace but still managed to hold on for fifth. Blacksmith, Spirit of Royal, Easterly, and Autobahn rounded out the field.

With the result, Emerging Market secured his place in the Kentucky Derby starting gate, though trainer Chad Brown indicated a final decision on running will come after discussions with ownership. Meanwhile, Pavlovian and Golden Tempo, who now sit at 3rd and 6th in the Kentucky Derby Point standings, also guaranteed themselves a place in the field of 20.

The Louisiana Derby once again delivered a performance that may resonate beyond New Orleans, as both the winner and runner-up showed the kind of stamina and determination required at longer distances. The Derby field will further take shape next weekend, with the running of the Arkansas and Florida Derbies.
