Knightsbridge delivered one of the more impressive performances of the Del Mar summer meet Saturday, powering clear in the stretch to capture the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic by 6 1/4 lengths. The 5-year-old son of Nyquist entered the 1 1/4-mile race as the favorite and answered one of the biggest remaining questions surrounding his career, proving that his high-level speed could translate to the classic distance against a deep field of older horses.

Breaking from the outside post under Junior Alvarado, Knightsbridge was involved from the opening stages as Full Serrano also pressed forward and helped produce an aggressive early pace. The two established themselves near the front through the opening half-mile before continuing their battle down the backstretch.

Despite the demanding early fractions, Knightsbridge never appeared to lose his rhythm. Alvarado allowed him to settle into stride while remaining alongside Full Serrano, and the favorite continued traveling strongly as the field approached the far turn.

The race began to change entering the stretch. Knightsbridge put away Full Serrano and quickly separated himself from the rest of the field, turning what had been a competitive pace battle into a decisive victory. He continued to widen his advantage through the final furlong and crossed the wire comfortably in front.

Original Sin, who had raced at the back of the 11-horse field during the early stages, produced a strong late rally to finish second. Full Serrano tired in the funal furlong but held on for third, while Om N Joy finished fourth.

The victory marked the first Grade 1 win for Knightsbridge and continued an outstanding season for the Godolphin homebred. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, Knightsbridge entered the Pacific Classic following a dominant victory in the Grade 3 Monmouth Cup, his first attempt around two turns. Earlier in the year, he had also established himself as one of the country’s leading older horses with a series of graded stakes victories at Gulfstream Park.

The Pacific Classic provided a considerably different challenge. Knightsbridge was stretching out to 1 1/4 miles for the first time while facing a field that included established Grade 1 performers. His ability to withstand a fast early pace and still finish strongly offered perhaps the clearest evidence yet that he belongs among the top horses in the older male division.

For Mott and Alvarado, the performance also strengthened an already powerful hand heading toward the fall championship races. Knightsbridge completed the Pacific Classic in 2:01.79 and earned an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The Pacific Classic has long served as Del Mar’s signature race and one of the most important events for older horses in the second half of the season. Past winners include champions and Hall of Fame-caliber runners, and Saturday’s performance immediately placed Knightsbridge into the national discussion as the Breeders’ Cup approaches.

With his questions about distance answered, fashion, Knightsbridge leaves Del Mar with a Grade 1 victory and assuredly a confident trainer in Bill Mott. After controlling the pace throughout and finishing in a dominiating fashion, Knightsbridge will be one to keep an eye on at Keeneland in November.
