Commentator, the popular gelding who twice captured the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga, has passed away at age 24. Officials at Old Friends at Cabin Creek confirmed the New York-bred was humanely euthanized following a recent illness that had severely impacted his quality of life.

Bred by Michael Martinez and owned by Tracy Farmer, Commentator was trained by Hall of Famer Nick Zito and earned a devoted fan base during his long and versatile career. He won 14 of 24 starts and earned over $2 million, highlighted by stunning Whitney victories in 2005 and 2008.

“He was tough, sound, and had a heart that never quit,” said those close to the gelding in a statement shared by the farm. “He gave us everything, and we did everything we could for him in return.”

Commentator retired to Old Friends in 2011 and quickly became one of the farm’s most beloved residents, known for his laid-back demeanor and striking chestnut coat. He was regularly visited by fans and school groups and was featured in multiple equine wellness campaigns.

The gelding’s dual wins in the Whitney Handicap place him among a rare group of repeat champions at Saratoga, a track famous for its upsets. His 2005 win in particular, a wire-to-wire romp over Saint Liam - is still regarded as one of the meet’s most memorable performances.

Commentator is buried at Old Friends, where a public memorial will be held later this summer.
