Burnham Square Dominates Grade 2 Elkhorn
Burnham Square got back to his winning ways on Saturday the 18th at Keeneland in the Grade 2 Elkhorn. It had been a year since the Ian Wilkes trainee had seen the winners circle. His last victory also came at Keeneland, where he turned in an up until that point in time, career best Beyer of 101 edging out East Avenue by a nose en route to the Kentucky Derby.
Burnham square would turn in a 6th place performance in the Derby. Followed up by a 5th place finish in the Haskell and then a pair of runner up finishes at Kentucky Downs and Gulfstream Park.
This victory put Burnham Square within striking distance of $2 million in career earnings. Wherever owner Whitham Thoroughbreds decide to run him next, any decent perforamnce will likely thrust him over that threshold.
Burnham Square is by Liam’s Map out of Linda, by Scat Daddy. He has finished in the money in nine of has twelve races. It remains to be seen where his connections will point him next, as Kentucky Downs seems like a viable option as he ran second there in the Grade 3 Nashville Derby last August.
Regardless of what the next race is for Burnham Square it would seem that all roads point to him running in the Breeders Cup at Keeneland later this year. He already had shown he liked racing here on the dirt last year, but this performance really turned heads with his career best Beyer figure and also breaking the record for largest margin of victory in the Elkhorn, topping Epicenter who won by 4 3/4 lengths in 2004. Whatever the connections decide to do with Burnham Square, if this race is any indication, it seems like his best racing days are ahead and not behind him.
