Breeders Cup Classic Champion Bayern Passes at 15
Bayern, the 2014 Breeders' Cup Classic winner and multiple Grade 1 winner, has died at the age of 15 following complications from emergency hernia surgery in South Korea. Great Hill Farm, where Bayern had stood as a stallion since 2022, announced that the son of Offlee Wild developed complications after surgery and was ultimately euthanized when his condition failed to improve.
Trained by Bob Baffert for owner Kaleem Shah, Bayern emerged as one of the nation's top 3-year-olds during the 2014 season. After winning the Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes, he added victories in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational and Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby before capturing the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita. The Classic victory followed a lengthy stewards' review after a controversial start, but the result was allowed to stand.
Bayern retired with six victories from 15 career starts and earnings exceeding $4.4 million. Following his racing career, he entered stud in Kentucky before relocating to South Korea, where he continued his breeding career and sired multiple stakes winners.
In announcing his passing, Great Hill Farm described the extensive efforts made to save the stallion following surgery. Despite intensive veterinary care, Bayern's condition continued to deteriorate, leading to the difficult decision to euthanize him.
Bayern leaves behind a lasting legacy both on the racetrack and in the breeding shed. His accomplishments during the 2014 season secured his place among the sport's most accomplished runners of his era, while his offspring will continue to carry on his influence for years to come.
