Journalism Wins Haskell Stakes, Will Return to California

Journalism delivered a stunning performance to win the Grade I Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park, securing a “Win and You’re In” berth to the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Breaking from post position 4, Journalism settled mid-pack before unleashing a strong rally through the stretch to capture the $1 million Haskell by a half-length. The final time was 1:48.15 for 1 1/8 miles on a fast main track.
The Haskell victory marked Journalism’s third Grade I win, adding to previous scores in the Preakness Stakes and Santa Anita Derby. Trained by Michael McCarthy and ridden by Umberto Rispoli, the colt has now won six of nine career starts.
With the win, Journalism earned an automatic berth into the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar through the Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” program. Connections confirmed the colt will return to his Southern California base, but were mum about future plans.
Journalism’s victory continues a stellar 3-year-old campaign, with his versatility and late kick establishing him as a major contender on the national stage heading into the Breeders’ Cup season.
